Patrick Messina, is well known to orchestras and audiences as one of the leading clarinetists of our times. In 2003 Patrick Messina became Principal Clarinet of the Orchestre National de France under Kurt Masur’s direction. His artistry and talent have made a great impression on several famous conductors such as Bernard
Haitink, Georges Prêtre, Daniele Gatti, Daniel Harding and Riccardo Muti, who
subsequently, has given him the opportunity to make his debut as a soloist with the Orchestre National de France in two performances of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in April 2007.
A frequent soloist with many orchestras, Patrick Messina has performed with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre de Cannes, the Philharmonie der
Nationen, the Orchestre National d’Ile de France and the Orchestre National de Chambre de Toulouse under the direction of Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Jacques Mercier, Justus Frantz, John Axelrod and Jaap van
Zweden. In 1996, he made his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall in the Weill Recital Hall. From 1996 to 2002 he has worked regularly with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York and
conductors, James Levine, Carlo Rizzi, Leonard Slatkin and Valery Gergiev.
An avid chamber music player Patrick Messina collaborates regularly with Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Katia and Marielle
Labeque, Daniel Hope, Matt Haimowitz, Jean-Marc Luisada, Gautier Capuçon, the Elysee and Debussy String Quartet and the Beaux Arts Trio and has appeared regularly in many festivals, including “Les Flaneries Musicales de Reims”, the Pablo Casals festival in Prades, the Yehudi Menuhin festival in Gstaad, the Savannah Music Festival (USA), the Festival der
Nationen, Mittel Europa (Germany) and the Spoleto festival (Italy).
Patrick Messina is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards. He has captured top prizes at the Buffet Crampon International Competition in Paris; at age 14 he was the youngest member to be selected in the World Youth Orchestra, under the baton of Witold
Rowicki, as well as in the National French Youth Orchestra (Orchestre Francais des Jeunes) under the direction of Emmanuel Krivine and in 1992, he became a laureate of the Yehudi Menuhin
Foundation. Aged only 18, he was the first prize winner in both the chamber music and clarinet division at the prestigious Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. In the United States, Mr. Messina won the first prize of the Houston Ima Hogg National Young Artist
Competition, the Heida Hermanns International Young Artist Competition and the East & West Artists International Auditions in New York.
Born in Nice, France, of Sicilian and Spanish parents, Mr. Messina began taking clarinet lessons with his
father, and continued his studies with such prominent teachers as Guy
Deplus, Michel Arrignon at the Paris Conservatory and Franklin Cohen at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In 1994 the Foreign Ministry of France awarded Mr. Messina with the Lavoisier Scholarship which made it possible for him to further his studies in the United States.
Né à Nice, de parents sicilien et espagnol, Patrick
Messina est depuis 2003 1ère Clarinette Solo de l'Orchestre National de
France (dir: Kurt Masur). Il commence son apprentissage au Conservatoire
de Nice puis poursuit ses études au Conservatoire National Supérieur de
Musique de Paris ou il obtient à tout juste 18 ans les Premiers Prix de
clarinette et de musique de chambre dans la classe de Guy Deplus puis de
Michel Arrignon. Entre temps il participe au World Youth Orchestra(dir: W.
Rowicki) et à l'Orchestre Français des Jeunes (dir: E. Krivine). En 1992
il devient laureat de la Fondation Yehudi Menuhin. Grace à une bourse
Lavoisier, decernée par le Ministère des Affaires Etrangères il
s'installe aux Etats-Unis pour approfondir sa formation au Cleveland
Institute of Music auprès de Franklin Cohen.
Un an plus tard, fort d'un 1er Prix obtenu aux East
& West Artists International Auditions de New York, il est invité
pour un récital au Weill Recital Hall du célèbre Carnegie Hall. Il
enchaîne ensuite les succès dans les plus prestigieux concours
américains dont le Houston Ima Hogg Young Artists Competition (1er Prix,
1996) et le Heida Hermanns International Young Artists Competitions (1er
Prix, 1998) et travaille régulièrement pendant 6 ans au Metropolitan
Opera de New York sous la direction de James Levine, Valery Gergiev ou
encore Leonard Slatkin.
Patrick Messina poursuit une carrière de soliste et de
chambriste. Il a joué notamment avec l'Orchestre Symphonique de Houston,
l'Orchestre National de France, l'Orchestre de Cannes, l'Orchestre
National d'Ile-de-France, l'Orchestre de chambre National de Toulouse,
l'Orchestre des Nations (Allemagne), sous la direction de chefs tels que
Yehudi Menuhin, Jacques Mercier, Justus Frantz, Jaap Van Zweden et John
Axelrod. Les 14 et 15 Avril 2007, Patrick jouera le Concerto pour
Clarinette de W.A Mozart au Théâtre des Champs Elysées avec l'Orchestre
National de France sous la direction de Riccardo Muti. Il se produit en
formation de chambre en Europe et aux Etats-Unis aux côtés de Jean-Yves
Thibaudet, Gautier Capuçon, Katia et Marielle Labeque, Daniel Hope,
Jean-Marc Luisada, les Quatuor Debussy et Elysées ou encore le Beaux Arts
Trio. Patrick Messina est invité à se produire dans de prestigieux
festivals comme Spoleto (Italie), Y. Menuhin Festival à Gstaad
(Autriche), les Flanneries Musicales de Reims (France), Mitte Europa
Festival (Allemagne), le Savannah Music Festival (USA) et le festival
Pablo Casals à Prades (France) .
